Baofeng website, new models

Baofeng is on a roll. Their new website not only lists the latest models, but gives some clues regarding their future plans. Under one of the drop-down menus there’s a link to ‘Two-Way Mobile Radios’, but no products are listed yet. We’ll have to keep an eye on that part of the website.

What they do list, amongst other things, are new varieties of the Baofeng UV-5R. A new, hi-tech looking LCD is the most striking feature, which we already know from certain TYT models. The new models are dubbed BF-F8 and BF-F8+. From the website:

“BF-F8+ series two-way radio are the newest styles by BAO FENG, it has multi-functions, such as dual band, dual display, dual watch, its performances are excellent, the shape is fashionable. The background is very unique, make it look elegant and luxious.. “

The BF-F8+ looks nice for sure, but I expect the other specifications to stay the same. Apart from product and company info, there are some nice pictures of the production process. Worth a look.

  1. Wow!! They are on a roll… I figure, now, what, a new model comes out every 6 months. I now actually have enough HTs to equip a whole club 😦 I cannot help it… I have 3 brand’s radios now… looks like I have to get ready for more radios… as long as they get FCC approval.

  2. Yeah, and so little difference between these “follow up” models,
It’s kind of their own “downfall” , as i see it, they produce such cheap stuff, when it gets broken, you buy the new model, it’s made in such a way, that it can’t be repaired.
or transport costs will out weigh the purpouse.

  3. This new model looks very nice.. !

if it does same specs in hardware/price as in the uv-5r then its a winner!

(only minus with Baofeng is max 128 channels programmable.. need more for dual band porto with wide freq range! )

  4. Don`t attempt to plug this into an outside antenna .Great sensitivity but no selectivity.
    No front end traditional filters.
Great with the rubber duck only.

  5. Just got this radio. It does not have the black display even though the picture on the box shows it. Firmware is BFB297. I’ll be contacting Baofeng since they said it was supposed to have the black display.

  6. “That would be a disappointment. The display was clearly advertised, up to the print on the box. You’re sure there’s no menu option to set the display to inverse or something similar?” — Hans

Nothing in the manual about setting the display to inverse. I haven’t been able to find it in the setup menu.

The screen doesn’t seem capable of black inverse text from my knowledge of LCD technology.

    • I too just purchased this radio and found the same issue with the display. Not a HUGE deal but definitely something that needs to be addressed with Baofeng/sellers.

      • I just got one as well. The display is not as shown at all. When the BL goes out you can’t see anything at all it’s just black. You can press the EXIT button to get the BL to come back on. All the same I kinda feel like I got a bait and switch. $50.00 on Amazon so I wont make a big deal out of it.

  7. Many are not happy with black display. Only visible when “lit”. After timeout, you can see nothing. Must activate key or wait for transmission to finish to be able to see it. You might not find it a great as it looks.

    • I can still see my display just fine when the display lights go out, now if it’s dark out then you cannot see the display that’s true, but if it’s daytime or if you’re in a lighted room then you can see it just fine. BF-F8+
