IC-93AD – Another Fake Icom.

Either Icom hides new models from us westerners, or this Icom is fake. Well, the last option is correct.

The price isn’t right (Icom is generally very expensive, a bit too expensive actually), the red dot above the “I” isn’t there, I saw this radio before under another (Chinese) brand name, an no single Icom website, not even the Japanese one, lists this model.

This is not the first time I run into counterfeit / fake Icom models. I’ve seen a few in the same enclosure as some less known Baofeng models. Search for Icom on AliExpress and you’ll probably find more. Read what Icom has to say about the IC-V89.

  1. These aren’t “fakes.” They are made by the same manufacturer on the same lines using the same parts as the “real” Icom, except they are just not ordered by Icom. Why would a factory making a $25 radio for Icom to sell for $400 want to shut down the line just because Icom could only sell 1000 radios that week? So, they just keep on producing after Icom’s orders are done and just change a tiny detail here and there. This happens for almost everything that is made in China. Factories don’t make money if they’re not running, and having all of that capital sitting there idle is a waste of money.
