The new Wouxun KG-UV6D, more ham friendly

No so long ago, Wouxun was best known as a manufacturer of commercial VHF/UHF handhelds. Yes, you could use them for ham purposes, but some aspects of the user interface were telltale signs of their heritage. Not anymore. Wouxun is now producing a few of the most interesting ham products available today. The key to their success: price/performance, and the new KG-UV6D takes ham-friendliness to a new level. The retail price ($159) raises the question though if Wouxun will stay as interesting as it used to be.

FCC approval
Wouxun was the first Chinese manufacturer to get official FCC approval for many of its products. Other manufacturers claimed that too, but I wasn’t able to verify that. Why is that important? Well, for a start, you’re not using something illegal. Furthermore, emission and harmonics suppression are up to date.  The new KG-UV6D even adds 2.5KHz steps, in order to comply with the FCC 2013 narrowband specification. Not so interesting for Europe, but it will be for our American friends. Although the KG-UV6D looks a lot like its predecessors, one button immediately catches the eye: a dedicated repeater button.
